The Relentless School Nurse: Did Moms For Liberty Just Came After School Nurses?

Content alert, this post is absolutely political and necessarily so. Moms For Liberty, the ultra-right wing group that has focused their white supremacist ideals in school districts across the country may now be coming after school nurses. In a recent social media post, they called for a ban on all health care services in schools, which by extension includes school nurses.

Here is the post, you can decide what they meant, and they may have tried to clarify their comments with some backpedaling about school nurses, but as Maya Angelou reminds us, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

Let’s delve deeper into the implications and concerns surrounding the stance taken by Moms for Liberty and their opposition to health care in public schools. What could happen if school health services were banned, like books in certain public school libraries and classrooms

  1. Impact on Student Well-being: Denying health care and mental health services in schools can have detrimental effects on student well-being. School nurses play a crucial role in addressing immediate health needs, administering medications, managing chronic conditions, and providing preventive care. Without access to these services, students may face barriers to learning, and their overall health and academic success could be compromised.

  2. Mental Health Support: Mental health issues among students are prevalent and can significantly affect their educational experience. School nurses, along with counselors and other mental health professionals, offer essential support in identifying signs of distress, providing early intervention, and facilitating access to appropriate resources. By rejecting mental health care in schools, Moms for Liberty may inadvertently hinder the well-being of vulnerable students in need of professional support.

  3. Inclusivity and Diversity: Public schools cater to diverse student populations with varying health needs. Banning health care in schools overlooks the reality that not all families have access to healthcare outside of school. For some students, school-based health services might be their primary source of medical attention. By advocating for a blanket ban on health care, the group may further exacerbate existing health disparities among students.

  4. Confidentiality and Privacy: School nurses are trained to provide confidential care and maintain the privacy of students’ health information. Removing health services from schools may lead to students seeking medical attention elsewhere, potentially compromising their privacy and exposing sensitive health information to others outside the school setting.

  5. Collaboration and Partnerships: School nurses often collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support students’ health needs. By removing health care services from schools, an opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration is lost, hindering the development of comprehensive strategies to address students’ health concerns effectively.

  6. Impact on Academic Performance: The availability of health care services in schools positively impacts students’ attendance and overall academic performance. When students’ health needs are addressed promptly, they are more likely to attend school regularly, engage in learning, and perform well academically.

  7. Equity and Access: Advocating for the removal of health care services in public schools could disproportionately affect vulnerable and marginalized students who may face barriers to accessing health care outside of the school setting. School-based health services can bridge gaps in healthcare access and promote equity among students. The presence of a school nurse democratizes health care in schools for our most underserved students and school communities.

The push by Moms for Liberty to ban health care in public schools raises significant concerns about the well-being and academic success of students. The importance of school nurses and their role in providing vital health care services should not be overlooked or dismissed. A balanced and informed approach is necessary to address the diverse health needs of students while promoting an inclusive and equitable educational environment.
