The Relentless School Nurse: Let’s Celebrate Ourselves on May 10th – School Nurse Day 2023

SCHOOL NURSE DAY 2023

Wednesday, May 10, 2023

Since 1972, National School Nurse Day has been set aside to recognize school nurses.

National School Nurse Day was established to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting.

School Nurse Day is an annual observance that celebrates and recognizes the important role that school nurses play in promoting the health and well-being of students in schools. School nurses are responsible for providing a wide range of health services, including health screenings, medication administration, emergency care, health education, and disease prevention.

Celebrating School Nurse Day is a way to recognize and acknowledge the important work that school nurses do every day. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the impact that school nurses have on the lives of students and the school community as a whole. Celebrating School Nurse Day can also help raise awareness and appreciation for the profession and the vital role that school nurses play in keeping students healthy and ready to learn.

As a school nurse, taking time to celebrate yourself on School Nurse Day can also be an important act of self-care and recognition of your hard work and dedication. It can be a way to connect with colleagues, share experiences, and recharge for the rest of the school year. Celebrating School Nurse Day can also help foster a sense of pride and professional identity among school nurses, which can be empowering and motivating.

As we gear up for National School Nurses Day on May 10th, it occurred to me that we should celebrate ourselves this year. There are too many school nurses who post on social media that their administration did not acknowledge the day. For those school nurses who are fortunate to have supportive school communities, we are celebrating you too. But this post is for those who are not as fortunate, where the one day of the school year is dedicated to school nursing, there may be little mention from school.

Here are some suggestion on how to celebrate yourself as a school nurse on School Nurse Day even if your school doesn’t acknowledge the day:

  • Take a personal day off: You can take the day off and use the time to do something that you’ve been meaning to do, such as going to a spa, trying a new restaurant, or visiting a local museum.
  • Host a small celebration with colleagues: You can gather with other school nurses in your district or even within your own school to share a meal, exchange small gifts or tokens of appreciation, and discuss the challenges and joys of your profession. You can also use this opportunity to learn from each other, share resources and ideas, and build a supportive network.
  • Share your achievements: If you have received any special awards or recognition for your work, share the news with your colleagues, friends, and family. This can be a great way to acknowledge your hard work and dedication to your profession.
  • Advocate for your profession: Use the day to educate others about the importance of school nurses and the value they bring to their schools and communities. You can write a letter to your local newspaper, speak to your school board or district administrators, or simply share information on social media.
  • Celebrate virtually: If you’re unable to meet with colleagues in person, you can still connect and celebrate virtually. You can set up a video call or group chat to share your experiences and stories, or participate in online events or discussions hosted by national or regional organizations.

Remember, the most important thing is to take time to acknowledge your hard work and dedication as a school nurse, and to recognize the important role you play in the lives of your students and your community.
