Kids are challenged each day to participate in the activities listed on the calendar. For the month of August, since many kids are still on summer vacation, we encourage kids, their parents, and their friends to all practice simple fitness exercises during the week and on weekends. Teachers can also use the calendars for brain boost breaks if they are teaching summer school! Some of the exercises include planks, sit-ups, and hip bridges.

Wednesday is Cardio Day! Kids can spend the allotted time skipping, doing jumping jacks, or hula hooping.

Each week, the number of repetitions for each fitness exercise increases. Please keep in mind the number of repetitions is meant as a guide, and can be adapted as needed based on age group and skill level.

Descriptions for Exercises

Crab walks: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat. Place your palms on the floor behind you, then lift your hips and walk forward and/or backward on your hands and feet like a crab.

Planks: Get into the same position you would for a push up. The hands should be under the shoulders, a bit wider than shoulder-width apart. Hold the position for the specified time. For a simpler plank, you can place your forearms on the ground instead of your hands.

Hip bridges: Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Rest your arms by your sides. Press your feet down as you lift your hips off of the ground. Hold for the specified time.

Sit-ups: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet and heels flat. Cross your arms over your chest behind your head, hands on opposing shoulders. Pull up from the floor and stop when the elbows are on or past the knees.

August Observances

There are a few fun observances in the month of August that can be related to the Fitness Challenge Calendar!

  • National Golf Month
  • National Picnic Month
  • National Family Fun Month
  • National Wellness Month

Have some fun celebrating these observances while performing the activities on the calendar. On Saturdays, we suggest activities for the summer that also keep kids active. To celebrate Golf Month, play a game of mini golf or regular golf as a family. For Picnic Month, you can visit a local park and have a picnic, while the whole family throws a frisbee or plays baseball. The calendar as a whole is pefect for Wellness Month!

On page 2, you will find 30+ ideas on how to celebrate #FamilyFunMonth!

*Remember to look up all activities first to be sure they are safe and the businesses are social distancing.

Task Sheet

Download our printable Fitness Challenge Task Sheet for your participants to fill out each day. They will record what exercises they did and put a check mark in the completed box if they completed the number of reps on the calendar. There is also a self-assessment section which is great for social emotional learning. Kids will circle the emoji that best describes how they felt after doing the exercises. The notes section is a place where they can jot down anything related to the activities, and also a great place to record their hobbies they did each Saturday this month.
