September Printable Fitness Challenge Calendar

Our September Fitness Challenge Calendar is here!

Back to School is just around the corner, and our printable calendar is a great resource that teachers can share with students in the classroom. It can also be shared with parents to encourage their kids to stay active at home during the school year.

We teamed up with the Alliance For A Healthier Generation to create this fitness calendar for the month of September 2023. Here is the link to the download:

September 2023 Fitness Challenge Calendar

Students are challenged each day to participate in the activities listed on the calendar. The month of September is officially Back to School time, and we’ve included some basic fitness exercises, yoga poses, plus some brain boost break ideas. Each week, the number of repetitions for each fitness exercise increases. Please keep in mind the number of repetitions is meant as a guide, and can be adapted as needed based on age group and skill level.

On Saturdays, we encourage some outdoor activities to keep kids active over the weekend. As the fall season approaches, have kids toss a football and practice throwing skills, or visit a local orchard and walk through a cornmaze.

Descriptions for Exercises

Butterfly Kicks: Lie on your back. Keep your abs tight and raise your feet just barely off the floor and flutter kick them.

Tuck Jumps: Bend your knees and lift your heels high while jumping.

Mountain Climbers: Start in a push-up position, then alternate bringing one foot at a time forward toward your armpit and then extend it back out.

Sky Reaches: Raise your arms up to the sky. Then rise up on your tippy toes, continuing to reach for the sky while keeping your body tight. Hold for a set amount of time, then lower your heels and arms slowly.

Back to School Brain Breaks

We’ve included some fitness activity ideas that are great for classroom or home brain breaks! Students can use their desks, textbooks, and the classroom space to get active and take a break from their work, or they can use their home learning area. On Wednesdays, refer to the two Task Cards on page 2 of the calendar download for a total of 10 ideas.

September is National Yoga Month

The month of September is a great time to introduce yoga to your classroom or program, or if you already have a yoga unit established, you can create even more hype and excitement during National Yoga Month! Teach students the benefits of yoga, as well as some basic poses. Refer to the Yoga Task Card on Fridays on page 3, which includes 5 poses. You can choose to continue with these all month, or choose new poses each week.

Task Sheet

Download our printable Fitness Challenge Task Sheet for your participants to fill out each day. They will record what exercises they did and put a check mark in the completed box if they completed the number of reps on the calendar. There is also a self-assessment section which is great for social emotional learning. Kids will circle the emoji that best describes how they felt after doing the exercises. The notes section is a place where they can jot down anything related to the activities, and also a great place to record their hobbies they did each Saturday this month.

  4. These calendars are fantastic, I really started using them just last Spring when we went virtual.

AS I have Seen, it would be beneficial to receive a copy that is Editable where we could customize it a bit.

    • Hi Michele, so great to hear you love the calendars! I am emailing an editable copy to everyone who comments on the blog. We would prefer to only offer this non-publicly, only to those who request it. I can email you the calendars now!

  5. The calendar and task sheet are great. Would it be possible to get the calendars at task card in an editable copy? Can I also get the October calendar. Great resources for kids being home. Thanks

    • Hi Danielle, unfortunately we do not currently have the resources to create any calendars in additional languages. If you would like me to send you the template so you can edit it, I would be happy to do so.

    • I still would LOVE an editable version of these calendars, but never got a reply or email! I love the calendars, but when I copy them they do not copy well at all because they are colored. If I had an editable version or a black and white version it would be very helpful! Thank you!

  10. Super stoked to be using these again! Can I get the editable versions for the 19-20 school year? Also, do you have task cards or movement descriptions for the days? Not the Yoga Task cards or the brain breaks, I want to make sure I understand what the other movements. I make videos for the kids to access so they don’t “forget” how to do the movement at home.
    Thank you
