Spring 2022 offerings will include a special topics course in sport facility and event management

The Sport Coaching, Leadership, and Administration online graduate programs (Department of Kinesiology, College of Education) will offer several online, master’s level courses in the spring semester 2022. Courses are prioritized for students in online graduate programs in the College of Education, but students in other graduate programs may request an override to take these courses if seats remain available after November 12.

New Course for Spring Semester 2022

Sport Facility and Event Management (KIN 850 – Special Topics* in Sport Coaching and Leadership)

Course description: Sport facilities, be they a local swimming pool or an 80,000-seat college football stadium, require staff and administrators who understand the complexities that come with their management. Similarly, staging sport events demands a critical understanding of the planning, execution, and evaluation necessary to ensure a safe, entertaining, and successful event. This course will provide an in-depth examination of the operational aspects of facilities and event management, while also exploring the application of finance, marketing, legal and human resources principles to the facilities and event contexts. Additional topics will include project management and sustainability. Students will use case studies and practical assignments to demonstrate their comprehension of topics and will learn from guest speakers who are currently working in the facilities and events sectors of the sport industry. Other Courses for Spring Semester 2022

KIN 849 – Theory and Practice of Modern Sport Leadership. This 3-credit course will address theories of management and organizational behavior in a sport context; practical strategies and methods for management, development, and advancement of sport professionals, athletes, and stakeholders; principles of diversity and equity and inclusive leadership. The instructor will be Dr. Jeff MacCharles.

KIN 852 – Ethics in Sport Coaching, Leadership, and Administration. This 1-credit course will explore the moral obligations of sport coaches and sport leaders, detail a process for effective ethical decision-making, and engage in a structured academic controversy activity to examine a current issue. Students will have the opportunity to develop an independent case-study exploration. The instructor will be Dr. Andy Driska.

KIN 854 – Legal Aspects of Sport. This 3-credit course will explore general legal concepts, federal and state legislation, legal liabilities, duty of care for sport coaches and administrators, legal issues in amateur sport, safety of sport participants and spectators, and injury prevention and management. The instructor will be Alexandra Breske.

KIN 865 – Stages of Athlete Development. This 3-credit course will examine athletic development in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood; Long-term athlete development model; Physical literacy; Impact of biological maturation on performance; Interpretation of developmental data; Impact of growth on performance; Applications in coaching and program management. The instructor will be Dr. Jennifer Roth.

KIN 868 – Skill Development in Athletes. This 3-credit course will explore the process of athletic skill development through the lens of the constraints-led approach to coaching , which examines the contributions of individual factors (genetics, psychological factors), environmental factors (physical and sociocultural), and task constraints (manipulations of practice conditions). Methods of practice organization and skill instruction will inform a field experience where students will create a practice session video for peer and instructor critique. The instructor will be Dr. Andy Driska.

How to Enroll

Due to complications with our new course enrollment system, we are handling all enrollments in these courses manually. All students, regardless of their academic program, must request enrollment manually using our course override form no later than Tuesday, November 9. Requests will be processed on a rolling basis with priority given to students that are enrolled in online graduate programs.

Students enrolled in the MS in Sport Coaching, Leadership, and Administration that are planning to take practicum (KIN 880), internship (KIN 893), or capstone (KIN 896) in Spring 2022 should correspond directly with their major advisor, then make a request of the Kinesiology Graduate Secretary (Ms. Marlene Green) to be enrolled in these courses.
