A Case of the Wiffle

It hit me a couple weeks back. I was the pseudo umpire just down the first base line. As I scanned the crowd, 2 fields of 12 players each, their wives and friends with smirks on the sidelines, White Snake Here I Go Again and Violent Femmes Blister in the Sun playing on the beats box, it was clear to me, we were onto something.

Wiffle Ball has been played indoors and out, with all different styles and variations since the 1950s. Most of us played as kids and some play year round as adults. The AKA Wiffle Ball League at the National Sports Center’s Sports Hall was our first take at bringing organized game and recreation programming to adults.

Some AKA programs are grand slams, others are triples still rounding third for home, and others, solid singles that just get the people going! We hit a solid single here people. Adults playing a less structured kids game, with music and team comradery loaded with laughter, dancing, home runs and hustle.

This was a great experiment. Tonight is the last game of the season. And although we are going to table this league for at least awhile, we learned a ton with this first edition AKA Adult offering. There truly is a kid in all of us… thanks to a positive case of the wiffle. Thanks to John and Drew for arranging this one and a big thanks to all who participated! We hope to be back again!
