The Relentless School Nurse: Nurturing Hearts – Finding Peace in a Chaotic World

Retired English teacher, Joan Boyd Short, would end the week with this message to her students:

Remember, the world can be a sudden place. Take care of yourself. Take care of others around you. Take care of your heart! Choose the path of wisdom and come home safely to us whenever you can. You are loved in this place and will always find an open door. – Joan Boyd Short

Her message resonated with me. In this crazy, unpredictable world these words hold immense significance. They come from the voice of someone who knows the power of caring and never giving up on her students. The words remind me that we need to be this space for each other in addition to our students.

The world can throw us off balance in an instant—full of responsibilities, expectations, and uncertainties. In the midst of this whirlwind, we need to carve out moments of peace and reflection. Whether it’s diving into a good book, indulging in a hobby, or simply taking a breather, we can find ways to nourish our hearts and replenish our spirits.

But it doesn’t end with ourselves. The next part of the message reminds us to take care of others around us. We’re all connected, and our actions ripple through the lives of those we encounter. A small act of kindness, a compassionate word, or a listening ear can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

In a world that often values individualism, embracing the path of wisdom means understanding the importance of collective well-being. By extending care and compassion to those around us, we create a network of support that goes beyond our immediate circles.

In the midst of chaos, we must not forget to take care of our hearts. Our hearts hold our emotions, empathy, and guide us through life’s ups and downs. Nurturing our hearts means acknowledging our emotions, processing them, and building resilience. It means seeking support from loved ones, trusted friends, or professionals when needed. Remember, vulnerability is a sign of strength and our shared humanity.

The message reminds us that we are loved and will always find an open door within our community. It’s a place where we can find solace, understanding, and unwavering support. In this sanctuary, we draw strength from unity and the courage to face the world beyond.

Please let these words resonate with you too. Embrace their wisdom and let them guide you through this summer of renewal. The world can be sudden, but within the chaos, we can find moments of peace, connection, and love. Take care of yourself, take care of others, and above all, take care of your heart.

Always remember to include ourselves and each other in the nurturing communities that we strive to create.
