As a physical education teacher, I have been doing school fundraisers for 23 years. In spring 2019, my school, Odessa Upper Elementary, was one of the pilot schools for SHAPE America’s health. because of the lessons (and there are a lot of them) and because I receive a lot more giveback to my school.

My dad was a soccer player in high school and helped found a rec league in our community in East Hampton, CT, which my brother and I both played in. When I started middle school, there was no girls soccer team, and it didn’t occur to me that I wouldn’t be allowed to try out for the boys team — so I did. They really couldn’t say no.

In most conversations about improving schools, the role of physical education is an afterthought, or worse, not even mentioned. By dedicating physical education (PE) and physical activity (PA) as one of the ten components of the Whole School Model, a new emphasis on physical health opens the door to how we look at PE and PA in schools.

When every school across the country went remote in March of 2020, there was a collective spirit around the benefits of physical activity for students. We celebrated the ingenuity of physical education teachers and students to find creative ways to workout at home. Then we went back to school. That was 15 years ago.
