If you misbehaved in school, you had to beg your teacher and principal not to tell your parents. After 20 years in the major leagues I was put in my high school Hall of Fame – for swimming. It was all farming and ranching around there. Then they went into the farm machinery business when tractors replaced horses. In high school I ran sprints but we had no track coach. I’m not even sure I was out of high school, which was also illegal. He led in hits three times, walks four times and triples twice.

I made money with a paper route and as a professional marbles shark, won all the other kids’ marbles and lunch money until the mothers came to school to complain and they stopped me. Signed for $125 a month. Dean was the greatest at changing the pace at which he worked. I was a shortstop and the second baseman was Bobby Doerr.

His best year was 1958: 21-7, Major League Cy Young Award, World Series MVP -- working in four games with a 2-1 record. My high school coach, a bird dog for the Browns, arranged a tryout for me at Sportsman’s Park. The night I graduated from high school in 1948, I signed for $1,200 -- $600 bonus and the rest salary.
