Well, it’s July and summer vacation has just begun here in North America. For those of you still checking PE Update, I thought I’d provide a video of a new sport that you’ll probably never be able to play in your school (because it looks expensive to set up), but that looks like a lot of fun. It’s called Bossaball and it’s a combination of volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and trampolining!

The Challenge A 2019 Magnus Health survey showed that school nurses and health staff spent 38% of their time on administrative tasks. Now? Jennifer Hill, Director of Health Services at Westover School, estimates that 50 – 60% of her workload is dedicated to administration. The COVID-19 pandemic played a major role in this increase in school nurse responsibilities.

I was one of the speakers sharing the impact of gun violence in schools and spoke about the power of collaborating with school nurses to bring #BeSMART and ERPO training to our school communities. I recommended that school nurses may be the best way for these life saving programs to be introduced to school communities.

The Challenge Jenn Sezonov, RN, joined Wheaton Academy in 2020 as their first full-time nurse. The school previously relied on part-time health staff to administer student medication at lunchtime. With the increase in student health needs around COVID-19 , they hired a full-time school nurse to support their community. Wheaton Academy’s health office uses Magnus Health to track medication information, stay organized with medical forms, and prepare for emergencies.

The Challenge Prior to Magnus Health, Ridley College used a combination of paper-based processes and an electronic medical record (EMR) solution to manage student health. While the EMR offered some nice features, it was designed for doctor’s offices and did not cater to K-12 schools.
