Technological Advance in Hockey Skates…Why?

There’s a new innovation in ice hockey that the inventor believes will “revolutionize the game of hockey.” Called “Thermoblades” it’s a new type of hockey skate that uses rechargeable batteries and computer microprocessors to heat the skate blades. The result is a thicker layer of water between the blade and the ice surface, which reduces friction and increases skating speed.

Philip Sunshine, 92, a founder of neonatal medicine, retires from caring for babies

When Philip Sunshine , MD, now a professor emeritus of pediatrics, arrived at Stanford as a resident in 1956, neonatology as a medical specialty didn’t exist. Health insurance companies didn’t cover most newborn care. At that time, more than half of premature infants died. In the ensuing decades, Sunshine built a career that spans the entire history of his academic field.

It started in 1981 when Shannon was born at Stanford Medicine. Born nearly three months early at 29 weeks, she was transferred to neonatology for breathing issues, a brain bleed, and a double hernia.
