I don’t know what it’s like in your region when it comes to cross-country participation, but our elementary school numbers are quite high. Yet our high school participation has declined to the point that some age-group races have only 20 athletes standing on the line. Once broken, the exercise habit is hard to re-start.

Add Movement to the School Day to Boost Student Physical Activity and Learning

Elementary students get the majority of their movement during the school day in physical education (PE) and recess. It is estimated that kids get about 5,000-6,000 steps during school on non-PE days and 7,000-8,000 steps on PE days. Middle and high school students take even fewer steps during a typical school day.
