This topic might seem like a bit of a stretch for a physical education blog, but, well…it does involve a varsity runner, dancing and goal-setting. Ellen includes dancing in many of her segments, and Jenna thought she’d attract Ellen’s attention by posting YouTube videos of herself dancing in strange situations.

At some point, most physical education teachers have had to give up the gym for a concert, rehearsal, assembly, construction, or other school/community activity. I once taught physical education classes outside — in Minnesota — for a full school year (and a month into the next year) when our gymnasium was being renovated.

Dance is a polarizing subject in the world of physical education: some teachers love to teach it, other teachers can’t even imagine themselves teaching it. Regardless of your personal comfort level with the activity, I believe dance should be a part of every student’s physical education experience.

The incredible part of what I saw this weekend was not that there was an education conference; it was the precision and vision that was created first in her mind and then willed into existence. Educators usually aren’t treated like this! I walked away with a better understanding of who she is a mom as well as an educator.

Each year, our school’s Gone Fishin’ trip combines physical education with outdoor recreation. Whether the activity is basketball or fencing, dance or “circus arts,” it generally has well-defined rules, a time-driven structure, and adults to studiously facilitate. He has served as Ancona’s Outdoor Learning Educator since 2016.
