My name is Casey Page and I am a physical education teacher in Shelby County, Kentucky, which is a suburb of Louisville. I also coach golf and am an assistant athletic director at our school, but I have always thought of myself as a teacher first. That’s when the wheels started turning and the idea of advanced PE came to life.

Are you losing your gym space for a class period, a day, a week or longer? At some point, most physical education teachers have had to give up the gym for a concert, rehearsal, assembly, construction, or other school/community activity. And, although teaching PE without a gym is not ideal, it is possible.

and as students slowly file into the gym, curiosity fills the air. To teach my students about these activities, I often go beyond my school’s traditional PE space — and use the city as my physical education classroom. The 20-minute bike ride serves as more than a “gym class.” The bell rings at 9 a.m.

When I ask for other examples, the gym falls silent. Their feedback can offer insights we might never see from the front of the gym. They open the door to a more student-centered, purposeful PE environment where everyone feels seen and heard. Physical activity doesnt have to mean a gym workout or structured HIIT circuit.

Here are a few winter activities for elementary PE that include opportunities to practice personal responsibility, cultural studies, and physical fitness outside. When snowplows create large piles of snow outside our school, each PE class gets a hill of snow to create a snow fort. They all asked me, “How do you build a snowball?”

Elementary students get the majority of their movement during the school day in physical education (PE) and recess. It is estimated that kids get about 5,000-6,000 steps during school on non-PE days and 7,000-8,000 steps on PE days. HPE teachers already have it figured out! Predictability regulates emotions and behavior.
