Traditional approaches in physical education can lack joy, choice and relevance to students lives. The negative association with fitness can affect students perception of physical activity and the value of physical education. I often ask my students, How do you improve your fitness? Almost every time, they respond, run.
My focus in physical education centers on equity and inclusion in fitness, particularly access to fitness options in underserved communities of color. Too often, when I introduce new sports or fitness activities, my predominantly African American students say, “That’s a white sport.”
